Orange County SC embarks on their last out-of-state road trip in the regular season as they head up to the Pacific Northwest to play Tacoma Defiance on Saturday, October 9 at 7p at Cheney Stadium. OCSC opened up the 2021 USL Championship regular season in Tacoma back in May.

PLAYOFF UPDATE

Heading into OCSC’s last six games, the team is still positioned to make the USL Cup playoffs and a win against Tacoma not only will cap the season series on a positive note, but also bring OC much closer to the postseason. Since Tacoma beat OC on a rainy August evening in Irvine, the Defiance went from having an eight-game unbeaten streak to winning only one game in their last eight tries to date. 

BREAKING RECORDS

Attendance: 5,130 — OCSC played in front of the largest regular season crowd in club history at Championship Soccer Stadium on Saturday, October 2 against league leaders Phoenix Rising FC. Coupled with Oktoberfest, the final Beer Fest of the season, Championship Soccer Stadium provided an electric, playoff-like atmosphere from kickoff to the final whistle. OCSC has played their home games at Championship Soccer Stadium since 2017.

GOT GERMAN GOALKEEPING?

Despite the 1-0 defeat to Phoenix Rising FC on October 2, OCSC goalkeeper Patrick Rakovsky made yet another highlight reel save earning him a spot in the USL Championship Fans’ Choice Save of the Week – Week 24. Rakovsky came off his goal line to stop Phoenix forward Solomon Asante’s breakaway chance towards goal. The ball rebounded back to Asante who tried to chip his second attempt over the head of the out of positioned Rakovsky, but the German goalkeeper made a leaping lunge punching the ball out of play.

Irvine, CA. – The Orange County Soccer Club announced today the first-ever United Soccer League (USL) educational scholarship has been awarded to 15-year-old Sunheon Hwang of Irvine. Hwang becomes the first recipient of the Bellevue University scholarship.

“This is another landmark moment for our pathway to pro and we are grateful for the partnership between the USL and Bellevue University,” said OCSC President of Soccer Operations Oliver Wyss. “Sunheon is a special soccer talent and a first-class student and there could not be a more deserving player for the first ever OCSC educational scholarship! We are looking forward to developing Sunheon in our professional environment while supporting his ongoing education!”

For OCSC, awarding the first Bellevue University scholarship represents another first for the club with regards to youth soccer players and the club’s commitment to providing the best pathway to professional soccer for youth soccer players around the world.

“It’s been amazing playing for OCSC 2 and just being in a professional environment as a younger player,” said Hwang. “Every day, I learn more from high quality coaches and players around me that push me to do more all the time. I hope to continue working with this team and play the game I love at a high level.”

Hwang is a Korean American honor roll student at Crean Lutheran High School, and he currently plays for OCSC2. Prior to joining the club, Hwang played for OCSC Youth Soccer Network affiliated club West Coast FC. In May Hwang was part of the team from Orange County that competed in the USL Academy Cup Tournament in Tampa Florida.

“Helping students like Sunheon achieve both their dreams – of earning a college degree and having a professional soccer career at the same time – is what Bellevue University does best,” said Dr. Mary Hawkins, university president. “Sunheon exemplifies our hard-working students and we’re very excited to see him take advantage of the opportunity to achieve his goals on and off the field.”

The USL scholarship was established in July of 2021 and each member club of the USL Championship and League One are granted one full scholarship annually to award to a player to pursue their undergraduate or graduate degrees. Bellevue University is the Official Education Partner of the USL.

OCSC midfielder Eric Calvillo returned to the starting 11 after not being available for selection last week due to international duty with El Salvador. Phoenix midfielder Aodhan Quinn made his return to Irvine with his new team after signing with OCSC’s division rivals in the offseason. Quinn played three seasons for OCSC and appeared in 84 matches with 23 goals and 19 assists.

OCSC goalkeeper Patrick Rakovsky did all he could to fend off the Pheonix attack. Rakovsky made a goal-saving acrobatic save after coming out of the six yard box to slide into a one-on-one challenge. He deflected the ball and the rebound fell right at the feet of Phoenix. Phoenix tried to volley the rebound back towards the center of the box, but Rakovsky leaped and swung his glove to push the ball out of play.

In 32’, Phoenix attacker Darren Mattocks found himself one-on-one with Rakovsky and volleyed the ball over the head of the keeper into the back of the net. It was all that Phoenix needed to secure the victory.

The second half offered a better showing for the OCSC attack as they found opportunities to cross the ball into the box. Despite the chances, OC did not get the equalizer they deserved.

On the evening where Orange County SC hosts their Oktoberfest Beer Fest, the last of the season, Pacific Division leaders Phoenix Rising FC make their first appearance of the year to Championship Soccer Stadium in Irvine this Saturday, October 2 at 7pm. This will be their first of two meetings in OC in a span of 11 days.

RETURN OF THE QUINN

Phoenix midfielder Aodhan Quinn will step on Championship Soccer Stadium’s pitch not donning the black and orange for the first time since leaving Orange County this past offseason. Quinn joined rivals Phoenix after three seasons with OCSC appearing in 84 matches, scoring 23 goals, and notching 19 assists. Quinn was instrumental in OCSC’s run to the top of the Western Conference table and the USL Cup Western Conference Finals in his first season back in 2018.

THE CAPTAIN SCORES, THE CAPTAIN DANCES

In the first minute of first-half stoppage time in OCSC’s 2-1 home victory against Oakland Roots SC on Saturday, September 25, defender and captain Michael Orozco scored the equalizing goal off his header before celebrating by doing his signature dance. It was Orozco’s first goal this season and his first goal in USL Championship regular season play in nearly two years. Orozco scored all of his three previous goals during the 2019 season including one in the USL Cup Playoffs.

OCSC midfielder Mikko Kuningas scored his third goal of the season—a game winner—against Oakland Roots SC off a set piece two minutes from the final whistle and celebrated behind the goal with the County Line Coalition. Following a corner kick taken by midfielder Brian Iloski, the ball found midfielder Dillon Powers who was making an unmarked run towards the edge of the eight-yard box. Powers passed the ball back into the middle of the box where Kuningas tapped it in to break the deadlock and give OC the 2-1 scoreline.

Irvine, CA. – The Orange County Board of Supervisors recognized the Orange County Soccer Club (OCSC) with a resolution during its September 28th meeting.

Third District Supervisor Don Wagner presented the resolution, recognizing OCSC’s “dedicated service to the Orange County Community”. In the resolution, he highlights the Club’s commitment to providing affordable family entertainment while working to be “a positive, unifying force in the community”.  Supervisor Wagner will be on-hand at OCSC’s upcoming “Irvine Night” match on October 20th to present the resolution to the Club during a special halftime ceremony.

“It is a great honor for the club to receive this resolution from the County,” said Jeff Garner Orange County Soccer Club President of Business Relations. “OCSC’S primary goal has always been to be a positive force in the community and an asset to Irvine and greater Orange County.  To be a vital part of our community, we have always strived to provide not only entertainment but also valuable services for the soccer community of Orange County and support for the businesses of Irvine.  We believe working together with the City of Irvine and the OC Board of Supervisors we can accomplish far more, helping the Great Park in Irvine to become the premier soccer facility in the United States and a symbol of exceptionalism for all of Orange County. An emphatic last-minute goal from Orange County SC midfielder Mikko Kuningas gave the hometeam a decisive 2-1 victory over Oakland Roots SC on Saturday, September 25 at Championship Soccer Stadium in Irvine. The win gave third place OCSC a seven-point cushion over fourth-place Oakland in the Pacific Division.

OCSC was without the services of starting midfielder Eric Calvillo due to him going on international duty with El Salvador’s first team. Interim head coach Richard Chaplow gave midfielder Ben Mines his first start with the black and orange.

In the 19’, Oakland got on the board first with a goal that somehow got past OCSC goalkeeper Patrick Rakovsky in the bottom right corner. Rakovsky was screened by his own defender Brent Richards who initially challenged the goal scorer Ariel Mbumba.

Oakland could have gone up another goal if it were not for OCSC captain Michael Orozco sliding in to block Oakland forward Johnny Rodriguez's shot. Orozco’s goal-saving block provided a needed spark to OCSC and their faithful in attendance. 

Orozco was rewarded for his defense when he scored his first goal of the season by using his head to connect with Iloski’s free kick in the 45+1’. The captain ran to the corner flag and broke out his signature celebratory dance while his teammates swarmed him. 

“I’m extremely happy to get that goal in front of family and friends,” Orozco said. “Hopefully, they enjoyed the little dance that I have and I’ve been waiting for it to release a little bit of stress. As a defender, that’s the only option you have [to head] when you go and attack. There’s more to come.”

Throughout this 2021 USL Championship season, OCSC has always been involved in late-game drama often giving up last-minute goals. However, this time OCSC reversed their fortunes with some Finnish magic. 

Subbed in the 67’, Kuningas came in to help the OC defense while adding attacking pressure that gave Oakland’s defense problems as the match neared the end. 

In the 90+1’, Iloski whipped in a corner kick that went over the heads of OC attackers and Oakland defenders. OCSC midfielder Dillon Powers made a run behind the line of players and arrived at Iloski's cross in time to hit a one-time pass back into the middle of the box where Kuningas was there to score a point-blank game-winner. Kuningas and the rest of OCSC ran to the supporter’s section celebrating with them in the haze of orange smoke. 

“I’ve been waiting for it and it felt great especially when you’re scoring in the last minutes,” Kuningas said. “It’s always amazing and it gives us a boost and good energy.” 

Despite giving up their first Oakland goal this season, OCSC remains undefeated all-time against the USL newcomers. OCSC heads into the last month of the season with a date with Pacific Division leaders Phoenix Rising FC. It will be the first time Phoenix comes to county this season meaning that former OCSC player Aodhan Quinn will return to Championship Soccer Stadium as a Phoenix player. The game kicks off on Saturday, October 2 at 7:00pm

Coming off forward Brian Iloski’s perfect aerial cross, Damus’s goal froze the Phoenix goalkeeper as the ball tucked right into the upper left corner. Damus’s equalizing goal was named a finalist for the USL Championship Fans’ Choice Goal of the Week – Week 22. 

CATCHING UP WITH OCSC 2

OCSC 2, the club’s reserve team, have been competing in the USL Academy League against other USL reserve squads in the Southwest region of the country. In its first year of existence, the USL Academy League offers senior clubs to more formally develop the top youth prospects in their local area. So far, OCSC 2 has gone 0-3-3 and is inching closer to earning their first win in their next two matches in October.

Orange County SC midfielder Eric Calvillo has been included in the official squad list of El Salvador’s Men’s Senior National Team for their friendly match against Guatemala on Friday, September 24 at Audi Field in Washington, D.C..

“I’m extremely excited for this opportunity of getting called up to my national team,” Calvillo said. “I can’t wait to go and [not only] represent my family but also the club. It’s a privilege and I hope to take advantage of this opportunity to be able to continue getting called up especially for the next qualifier games.”

Calvillo, 23, has played a central and important role in OCSC’s midfield since coming to the squad on loan from MLS side San Jose Earthquakes in June. In 18 games, Calvillo has scored one goal and dished out three assists, though most of his impact on the game comes in the build-up of an attack and on the defensive side of the ball. Calvillo leads the team with an impressive 89.8% pass accuracy after completing 1,021 total passes. He has made 21 interceptions on defense as well as winning 16 of his 25 total tackles. 

"Eric has been excellent since stepping through the door,” OCSC interim head coach Richard Chaplow said. “He brings quality on the ball and energy off it and it’s no surprise that hasn’t gone unnoticed by his national team staff, he deserves this opportunity."

If he appears in Friday’s match, Calvillo will earn his first cap with the senior team. Pèrez had named Calvillo to the preliminary roster for the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup, but was not selected for their final roster. Pèrez, who was El Salvador’s U-23 squad’s head coach prior to the Gold Cup, is already familiar with Calvillo. The Palmdale native made three appearances for El Salvador in the 2020 CONCACAF Men's Olympic Qualifying Championship in Mexico this past March shortly after committing to play for La Selecta due to his Salvadoran descent.

Prior to representing El Salvador in international competition, Calvillo was a part of the U.S. Men’s National Team youth setup. Calvillo represented the U.S. at the U15, U17 and U19 levels. For the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup, he was named to the final roster and made three appearances alongside current U.S. National Team players Tyler Adams and Christian Pulisic. Calvillo wore the captain's armband for the U.S. during the 2016 U19 Copa del Atlantico under head coach Brad Friedel.

La Selecta are currently ranked 63rd in the latest FIFA Men’s World Rankings from September 16. They are also part of CONCACAF’s third and final round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, nicknamed the Octagonal, where the top three automatically qualify to the final tournament to be held in Qatar and the fourth-place team advanced to an inter-confederation playoff. After the first three matches, they are sitting in seventh place after playing to a draw against the U.S. Men’s National Team during Matchday 1 at the Estadio Custaclan in San Salvador. 

This is the second time an OCSC player has had to temporarily leave the squad to play for their national team this season. Forward and leading scorer Ronaldo Damus was a part of Haiti’s squad in their run through the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup qualification tournament and main tournament in July.

Up a man and presumably in the driver's seat, Orange County SC was unable to find a winner or take home a point in the Valley of the Sun on a hot and humid Saturday, September 18. OCSC fell to hosts Phoenix Rising FC 2-1 via another late goal at the Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex at Wild Horse Pass.

It was only fitting that the first 45 minutes plus at Wild Horse Pass was going to be (wait for it) wild.

Following a 9’ corner kick that OCSC goalkeeper Patrick Rakovsky batted away, Phoenix recovered possession just inside the penalty box where forward Santi Moar was left unmarked. Moar struck the ball with his right foot and the knuckling shot ricocheted off the post and into the back of the net.

In the 16’, Moar thought he scored the second goal of the game, however, an interesting sequence of events transpired in the next minutes. Moar celebrated his supposed second goal, the Phoenix supporters section was billowing with red smoke and OCSC players and technical staff were visibly upset at the officiating crew. OCSC’s pleas were justified as fourth official informed match official Elton Garcia that Phoenix forward Aodhan Quinn was in an obvious offside position thus nullifying the goal.

At the half-hour mark, the play of the field and the banter off the field got chippy. Phoenix defender Tate Schmitt was shown a yellow card for a dangerous sliding tackle. In the setup for the OCSC free-kick, OCSC forward Brian Iloski pushed down a Phoenix player and was also shown a yellow card. OCSC midfielder Mikko Kuningas had to be subbed off early due to an injury and was replaced by midfielder Ben Mines.

In the first of five minutes of stoppage time, Mines dribbled the ball past the midline and was challenged by a trailing Schmitt. Without hesitation, the referee went to his pocket and flashed a second yellow card to Schmitt which equated to a red card and an expulsion. It not only changed the complexion of the next half, but also forced Phoenix head coach Rick Shantz to make a tactical change. He brought on Joey Calistri for midfielder Arturo Rodriguez who had just made a goal-line clearance that sprung an unsuccessful Phoenix goal-scoring chance.

The second half primed OCSC to capitalize on being a man-up and find the back of the net. In the 47’, Iloski crossed in a ball into the box where forward Ronaldo Damus was there to head the ball in the upper left corner of the goal. It was Damus’s team-leading 13th goal and provided the start that OCSC was expecting.

Despite maintaining possession for most of the second half, OCSC found themselves chasing Phoenix forwards in the defensive half. After strings of OCSC offensive possessions would produce no result, Phoenix turned the field and sent long balls past the OCSC defenders. It often required Rakovsky to come way off his line to steer the ball away or make a diving save.

In the 86’, Phoenix got the ball into a dangerous area with their attacking unit. Quinn was able to dribble the ball into the penalty box before shuttling a pass to an unmarked forward Darren Mattocks who tapped the ball in for the winner. It echoed the same scenes that occurred just a month ago when OCSC squandered a lead and Phoenix drew the game at the death.

With interim head coach Richard Chaplow’s first loss, OCSC missed their chance to move into second place and increase their distance between the playoff line. OCSC returns home for a date with the surprise team of the second half of the season, Oakland Roots, on Saturday, September 25. A week later Phoenix Rising FC visits Championship Soccer Stadium in what will be an entertaining matchup during OCSC’s Oktoberfest, the final Beer Fest of the season on October 2.

Up a man and presumably in the driver’s seat, Orange County SC was unable to find a winner or take home a point in the Valley of the Sun on a hot and humid Saturday, September 18. OCSC fell to hosts Phoenix Rising FC 2-1 via another late goal at the Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex at Wild Horse Pass.

It was only fitting that the first 45 minutes plus at Wild Horse Pass was going to be (wait for it) wild.

Following a 9’ corner kick that OCSC goalkeeper Patrick Rakovsky batted away, Phoenix recovered possession just inside the penalty box where forward Santi Moar was left unmarked. Moar struck the ball with his right foot and the knuckling shot ricocheted off the post and into the back of the net.

In the 16’, Moar thought he scored the second goal of the game, however, an interesting sequence of events transpired in the next minutes. Moar celebrated his supposed second goal, the Phoenix supporters section was billowing with red smoke and OCSC players and technical staff were visibly upset at the officiating crew. OCSC’s pleas were justified as fourth official informed match official Elton Garcia that Phoenix forward Aodhan Quinn was in an obvious offside position thus nullifying the goal.

At the half-hour mark, the play of the field and the banter off the field got chippy. Phoenix defender Tate Schmitt was shown a yellow card for a dangerous sliding tackle. In the setup for the OCSC free-kick, OCSC forward Brian Iloski pushed down a Phoenix player and was also shown a yellow card. OCSC midfielder Mikko Kuningas had to be subbed off early due to an injury and was replaced by midfielder Ben Mines.

In the first of five minutes of stoppage time, Mines dribbled the ball past the midline and was challenged by a trailing Schmitt. Without hesitation, the referee went to his pocket and flashed a second yellow card to Schmitt which equated to a red card and an expulsion. It not only changed the complexion of the next half, but also forced Phoenix head coach Rick Shantz to make a tactical change. He brought on Joey Calistri for midfielder Arturo Rodriguez who had just made a goal-line clearance that sprung an unsuccessful Phoenix goal-scoring chance.

Well, OCSC faces their rivals from the desert three times in their next five games starting with Saturday's road trip. The last two meetings will take place in Irvine just 11 days apart—Saturday, October 2 on Oktoberfest, the last Beer Fest of the season, and Wednesday, October 13 on Fiesta de Fútbol night.

OCSC defender Robbie Kiernan was named Dog Pawrk Brewing Co. Man of the Match after scoring his second goal of the season off a header while helping secure a clean sheet in OCSC’s 3-0 win against Las Vegas Lights FC on Saturday, September 11. He completed 90% of his passes and won five duels giving him an 8.2 FotMob rating. The complete performance earned him an honorable mention in the USL Championship Team of the Week for Week 21.
