After lengthy travel delays and an even longer injury report, Orange County SC ended their five match losing streak away from home and they did so by blanking the hottest team in the USL Championship, defeating the Indy Eleven 1-0 on Saturday, June 22 at Michael A. Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis, IN. The third goal of the season for forward Ethan Zubak and a seven save shutout from goalkeeper Colin Shutler secured a massive victory for the County Boys in the Circle City.

The first chance of the night for the Black and Orange came in the 16th minute when the ball found its way to midfielder Kyle Scott in the middle of the pitch. Scott scored from a similar position in OCSC’s last home match, but sent this shot up and over the bar. 

The County Boys found the opener in the 25th minute, courtesy of a thunderous header from Zubak. After a corner was half cleared by Indy Eleven, the ball fell to the feet of defender Owen Lambe. He whipped in a cross from the right flank that an open Zubak powered past Eleven goalkeeper Hunter Sulte, and OCSC led 1-0.

The Black and Orange nearly had a second goal after a chaotic sequence in the 42nd minute. Forward Cameron Dunbar unleashed a shot from over 20 yards out that rang off the left post, off the back of Sulte, and off the right post. Zubak was there to tap the ball into an empty net, but the goal was disallowed for offsides in the build up.

Orange County SC took a lead into the halftime team talks for the first time in seven matches and did so without allowing a single shot on goal in the first 45 minutes.

After not having to make a save in the first half, Shutler was called into action early in the second half in the 46th minute. Shutler kept out a rocket from Indy Eleven captain Cameron Lindley.

Shutler made his second save of the evening in the 53rd minute after midfielder Laurence Wootton carried the ball to the top of the box and shot from distance, straight into the grateful arms of Shutler.

Indy Eleven appeared to tie up the match in the 62nd minute, after they had a similar sequence to OCSC’s chaotic sequence in the 42nd minute. A close range shot from substitute forward Romario Williams hit off the crossbar and fell at the feet of forward Augustine Williams in front of an open net. Augustine tapped home, but the goal was disallowed for offsides.

Orange County SC nearly doubled their lead in the 69th minute, after defender Ryan Flood played a perfect ball over the top of the Indy defense and into the path of Zubak. Zubak fired a shot from the top of the box that beat Sulte, but rang off the left post and out.

Shutler made three saves in the final eight minutes of the match at Michael A. Carroll stadium, but none were bigger than the save he made on Romario Williams in the final minute of stoppage time. After the ball into the box was knocked down, Williams collected at the top of the box, turned towards goal and was searching for the lower left corner, but Shutler made the save, sprawling down to his right at full extension.

RUNNING CIRCLES AROUND THE COMPETITION

Indy Eleven enters Saturday’s match in 3rd place in the USL Championship Eastern Conference. With eight straight league victories, and 10 in all competitions, they have the longest current win streak and tied the longest win streak in the country (Orlando Pride, 8). It’s a similar pattern that OCSC found themselves in last year, where a long win streak saw their place in the table skyrocket. Indy Eleven are led by former San Diego Loyal midfielder Jack Blake, leading the team in goals (8) and tackles won (19). New addition Aedan Stanley has played every minute so far this season for Indy Eleven and leads the team in assists (7). Former OCSC midfielder Aodhan Quinn, the club leader in all-time assists, is still recovering from an injury and is expected to miss Saturday’s match.

USL CHAMPIONSHIP… BRACE FOR BRYCE

Orange County SC fell 4-2 on the road to Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC at Weidner Field last Saturday. Next Wave forward Bryce Jamison stole the show in the Rockies, becoming the youngest OCSC player ever to record a multi-goal game, one of which was named Goal of the Week. His strong performance in the Olympic City earned him a place in the USL Championship Team of the Week for Week 15, the youngest player in club history to achieve this honor. While Indy Eleven is on an eight match win streak in the league, six of these wins have been by a single goal. Make no mistake, Indy has still gotten the job done on this streak. However, if OCSC can keep their defensive shape and the scoreline close, they could be the ones to beat the streak.

A second half brace from Next Wave forward Bryce Jamison put Orange County SC into the lead at Weidner Field, but it was not enough for the three points as three unanswered Switchbacks goals saw the hosts walk away victorious on Saturday, June 15 in Colorado Springs, CO.

The evening’s first action came in the 7th minute after Switchbacks forward Maalique Foster found forward Ronaldo Damus in the center of the box with a long ball over the top. Damus’ first touch alluded him and goalkeeper Colin Shutler got a touch on the ball before Damus was able to shoot.

The first chance for the County Boys came in the 16th minute after Jamison forced a turnover on the right side of the pitch. Jamison then found captain Brian Iloski, who played Kyle Scott in through on goal. Scott made the extra pass into the path of forward Ethan Zubak at the six-yard-box, but he was unable to get a foot on it, and the ball went out for a goal kick.

The hosts took the lead in the 19th minute after defender Matthew Real found forward Yosuke Hanya. Hanya then dribbled into the center of the park and scored from over 20 yards out to give the Switchbacks the lead at 1-0. 

The Black and Orange had a chance to equalize in first-half stoppage time after Iloski won a free kick in the attacking third. Iloski whipped in a beautiful cross from the left side of the pitch, but defender Ashton Miles was unable to get a head on the cross, and OCSC entered the halftime team talk down 1-0.

That deficit did not last long in the second half, as defender Ryan Flood took a throw-in on the right side in the 49th minute. Flood’s long throw was headed down by the Switchbacks defense, but into the path of Jamison. The #NextWave star chested the ball down and vollied home a left-footed strike that nearly ripped a hole in the back of the net and the sides were level at 1.

Jamison bagged himself a brace and sent OCSC into the lead in the 61st minute, when midfielder Seth Casiple played a diagonal ball into the path of midfielder Ashish Chattha. Chattha was able to head the ball square across goal and into the path of Jamison before taking a big hit, and Jamison made no mistake beating goalkeeper Christian Herrera at his near post and OCSC led 2-1.

The lead was short lived as the Switchbacks were able to take advantage of a couple of fortuitous bounces in the 63rd minute as the ball eventually fell into the path of Foster at the right corner of the 18-yard box. Foster cut onto his left and fired back into the lower right corner of the net to equalize at 2.

Colorado Springs retook the lead and added an insurance marker with two quick fire goals in the 82nd and 86th minute as both Hanya and Foster scored their second goals of the night, enough for the hosts to take all three points on the night.

Forward Christian Sorto returned from injury and came on as a substitute late in the game and provided two quality chances late for the Black and Orange, but was unable to convert.

Despite a sluggish start to the season (1-5-1), the Switchbacks have shifted their momentum to power ahead on an undefeated stretch of five league matches heading into Saturday. A ROCKY START TO THE ROAD TRIP

Orange County SC suffered a devastating 2-1 loss to rival Phoenix Rising FC at Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex last Saturday in Phoenix, AZ. Forward Ethan Zubak brought the Black and Orange level in the 57th minute and then found themselves up a man in the 84th minute, but conceded the winner three minutes later. The County Boys now look to turn the tide heading into their second match of this three match roadtrip. While they also continued their streak of fielding the youngest matchday squad in the league, average age against PHX was 22.2 years old, veteran midfielder Seth Casiple returned to the Starting XI in Phoenix and brought his endless motor and much needed stability to the middle of the park.

After the announcement of a thrilling partnership deal between the USL Championship and TelevisiaUnivision, the world’s leading Spanish-language media and content company, Orange County SC is pleased to be a part of the inaugural day of national Spanish-language coverage on TelevisionUnivision’s sports channel, TUDN.

OCSC’s match against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC will be broadcasted across the country in Spanish on TUDN, following the completion of the Indy Eleven-San Antonio FC match on Saturday, June 15. The match is scheduled to kickoff at 6:00 PM PDT, but is subject to a potential delay if IND-SA runs long. 

In total, TUDN is scheduled to broadcast 11 USL Championship regular season matches in 2024, including OCSC’s matches this Saturday and on Wednesday, September 25 when the County Boys host Phoenix Rising FC. TUDN will also broadcast the USL Championship Final on Saturday, November 23.

Orange County SC fell 2-1 in heartbreaking fashion after conceding an 87th minute winner while being a man up on Saturday, June 8 at the Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex in Phoenix, AZ. The County Boys saw the second goal of the season from forward Ethan Zubak in the defeat.

The home team struck first in the sixth minute as midfielder Moahmed Traore found forward Gabi Torres on the left side of the box. Torres then found forward Dariusz Formella in the center of the box, who fired a right-footed-shot into the center of the net, putting Phoenix ahead early 1-0.

OCSC’s 17-year-old goalkeeper Duran Ferree recorded his first save of the night in the 20th minute as midfielder Erickson Gallardo found Formella on the right side of the box. Formella sent one on targett, but Ferree made a leaping save to keep Phoenix from adding to their lead.

Ferree was tested again in the 29th minute as Traore again pushed forward, finding Formella again in the center of the box. Formella fired one towards the center of the goal and Ferree made a terrific save to keep Phoenix at bay.

The teams went into the break with Phoenix ahead 1-0 with the lone goal from Formella being the difference.

The County Boys started the second half on the attacking front in the 54th minute, as midfielder Kyle Scott pushed forward on the left side of the pitch, crossing the ball into the box. Scott played the ball just out of reach of Zubak, however, forward Bryce Jamison caught up to it on the right side of the box. Jamison fired one from a difficult angle, as it missed just wide right of the frame.

The Black and Orange turned the momentum in the 57th minute. After winning a corner, captain Brian Iloski sent a cross into defender Ashton Miles. Miles backheeled the ball into traffic and Zubak met it first, crushing the ball into the back of the net to level the score at 1-1.

OCSC attempted to put another one on the board in the 64th minute as Scott again pressed forward. Scott found Dunbar in the center of the box, who fired a left-footed-shot that missed just wide to the left. 

Phoenix found another opportunity in the 73rd minute as Torres sent a cross into the center of the box that found the head of Gallardo. His header hit the crossbar and over the bar out of play. 

The game got chippy late with both teams searching for the winning goal. Phoenix substitute defender Edgardo Rito fell down in the box after a tough challenge from substitute Ben Barjolo. Subsequently, Rito shoved defender Andrew Fox, resulting in a yellow card. Rito continued jabbing at the referee and was shown a red card and an automatic ejection. This left Phoenix with 10 men for the remainder of the match. 

However, despite being down a man, Phoenix broke through the OCSC defense in the 87th minute. Traore played a ball over the top finding substitute forward Juan Carlos Azocar on the right side of the box. Azocar played the ball across the box to Formella at the back post and into the bottom left corner of the net for his second goal of the game, giving Phoenix the eventual 2-1 victory.

Orange County SC looks to make it six points from six to start the month of June when they head to Phoenix to face the Rising on Saturday, June 8 at 8:00 PM PDT. It’s the first meeting in 2024 between these two longtime rivals, so the temperature might not be the only thing running hot on Saturday.

A RISING STAR BETWEEN THE POSTS

Phoenix Rising FC enter Saturday’s contest in 6th place in the USL-C Western Conference. The defending champions have opened the campaign on a slow start. However, they are in the midst of a stretch where they have grabbed points in their last five league matches (1-1-3), including a goalless draw with the Las Vegas Lights at Cashman Field . Three of their four wins have come in front of their home crowd and they are anchored at the back by Argentine goalkeeper Rocco Rios Novo. Rios Novo has built upon an impressive first season in The Valley, as he is currently second in the league in saves (42), chasing only Monterey Bay FC’s Antony Siaha. Ten of his 42 saves came in Phoenix’s last match, where he was named to the USL-C Team of the Week bench.

ORANGE COUNTY’S YOUTH SHINES THROUGH

Orange County SC got back into the win column in a 3-2 victory over Detroit City FC at Championship Stadium last Saturday. Goals from forward Thomas Amang, midfielder Kyle Scott and substitute forward Bryce Jamison secured all three points in the win for the Black and Orange. The win also saw the return of defender Andrew Fox, who played the full 90 minutes at CB, and the debut of defender Ryan Flood, on loan from this week’s opponent. Unfortunately, this means that Flood will be unavailable for selection this Saturday, as he is unable to play against his parent club. However, the return of defender Ashton Miles from red card suspension will bring another added boost. Just like Jamison’s late winner, late goals have been a constant in this rivalry, with 28% of all goals in the series coming in the final 15 minutes of matches. Could we be in for more late drama on Saturday?

Orange County SC defeated Detroit City FC 3-2 on Saturday, June 1 at Championship Stadium in Irvine, CA. The Black and Orange saw a complete team effort with goals coming from forward Thomas Amang, midfielder Kyle Scott, and Next Wave forward Bryce Jamison.

The visitors struck first in the 19th minute as midfielder Rhys Williams won a free kick in the attacking half of the pitch. Midfielder James Murphy took the ensuing free kick, sending one into the box to defender Stephen Carroll. Carroll headed one into the top right corner of the net, giving Detroit an early 1-0 lead.

OCSC had their first quality chance of the night in the 34th minute, when midfielder Brian Iloski found forward Ethan Zubak on the right wing. Zubak cut back on his left and fired a shot on target that was saved by Detroit City goalkeeper Nathan Steinwascher.

The County Boys found the equalizer in the 40th minute, as defender Andrew Fox sent in a beautiful ball over the top to Amang. Amang struck one with his right foot that deflected off a Detroit defender and rolled its way into the back of the net, tying the contest at 1-1.

Both teams went into the break even, each looking for a chance at the winner in the second half.

The Black and Orange claimed the lead in the 57th minute when defender Owen Lambe controlled the ball on the right side of the pitch. He played a square ball into the box that made its way to Kyle Scott after a brilliant dummy run from Cameron Dunbar. Scott connected first time with a rocket off his right foot and into the back of the net, giving OCSC a 2-1 lead.

However in the 65th minute, Detroit City FC was awarded a penalty after a foul in the box. Midfielder Abdoulaye Diop stepped up to take the penalty, converting a right-footed-shot into the bottom left corner of the net, leveling the contest at 2-2.

The County Boys fought back and found the match winner in the 78th minute. Amang forced a turnover in the attacking half pushing forward to the left side of the box. He found Jamison in the middle of the box, who cut back onto his right and sent The Champ into a frenzy with a banger off his right foot into the bottom left corner of the net, putting OCSC up 3-2.

The defense held strong up until the final whistle, giving the Black and Orange the 3-2 victory.

The Black and Orange head on the road for their next three matches, but will return to Championship Stadium on Saturday, June 29 for Marvel Night against Oakland Roots SC at 7:00 PM! Orange County SC begins a new month of matches at The Champ, with the end of their homestand as they host the visiting Detroit City FC on Saturday, June 1 at 7:00 PM. It is OCSC’s annual Pride Night celebration, presented by IPA Physio.

Detroit City FC enter Saturday’s contest in 5th place in the USL-C Eastern Conference. After enjoying a spell of three straight matches unbeaten, including a win over MLS side and reigning Open Cup holders Houston Dynamo, they have lost their next two matches. This will be their second match away from home in four days, after a 5-1 loss at the hands of LouCity at Lynn Family Stadium on Wednesday. DCFC has gone undefeated against Western Conference sides so far this season (2-0-1), including a 2-1 win over Colorado Springs in their lone other Western road trip this season. They are led by midfielder Maxi Rodriguez in goals (3) and goalkeeper Nathan Steinwascher in saves (21). Former OCSC defender Alex Villanueva is expected to be available for selection.

Orange County SC dropped a 2-0 decision at home to Loudoun United FC last Saturday. It concluded a month in which OCSC suffered numerous key injuries and failed to pick up a point in league play and crashed out of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The good news is, Detroit City offers a new challenge and a new opportunity to get back on the right track. They will do so with the youngest squad in the league at the moment. Last week’s 20-man matchday roster average age was 21.7, and a similar number is expected on Saturday. As much as Saturday’s match is a chance for OCSC to get back on the right track, it’s also a chance for the #NextWave of youth talent at Orange County SC to rise up and help the ship while the veterans get healthy again.
