IRVINE, Calif. (September 13, 2018) – Following one of the USL’s most thrilling wins this season, Orange County SC travels north to face Fresno FC this Sunday.
Last Saturday, Orange County thrilled its home crowd with a 3-2 victory over OKC Energy FC. Trailing 2-1 as the match entered extra time, defender Noah Powder equalized and midfielder Aodhan Quinn scored the stunning winner. The victory earned Orange County sole possession of first place in the USL’s Western Conference, and continued adding to the club’s franchise record-breaking season totals. This weekend, Orange County SC will face a club battling to keep its post-season hopes alive.
"This weekend's match is going to be very difficult," said Orange County SC Head Coach Braeden Cloutier. "Fresno is fighting for a playoff spot, and this game will have a playoff feel. We’ve had a great week of training, coming off of a highly emotional comeback win last Saturday. We are hoping for the same energy and response on Sunday night."
Currently nine points below the 8th position, Fresno FC’s inaugural season has seen only one win over its last eight matches. Last Sunday, Fresno dropped a 1-0 result on the road against Swope Park Rangers. A bright spot is that the club has only lost twice at Chukchansi Park, with the previous loss occurring all the way back in mid-June. Midfielder Juan Pablo Caffa is one of the most skilled passers and set piece specialists in the USL, and leads the club in goals with nine. He is fifth in the league with 63 chances created.
In the previous meeting between the two squads on May 26th, Orange County defeated Fresno 3-0 at Championship Soccer Stadium at the Orange County Great Park in Irvine. Forward Thomas Enevoldsen opened the scoring in that match in the 10th minute, with substitutes Michael Seaton and Giovanni Ramos-Godoy each adding one of their own.
