Orange County SC dropped its second contest of the regular season with Rio Grande Valley FC Toros on Saturday night. The 2-0 loss at Championship Soccer Stadium was Orange County’s first loss in eight matches, also ending a four-match winning streak, and it was the Toros’ first road win of 2018.
RGVFC midfielder Matias Zaldivar made a great individual run in the 30th minute and he was able to curl a shot toward Orange County’s far post, around goalkeeper Andre Rawls. The Orange County shot-stopper would come up big minutes later, when the Toros’ Jordan Jones found a quality chance in front of goal only to be denied by Rawls.
The Toros would double its lead in first half stoppage time. With a free kick on the edge of the penalty area, forward Carlos Small was able to sneak a low shot through the wall of defenders and past Rawls.
Despite allowing two goals, Rawls played a big match for the hosts. He made six saves, including a double save early on in the second half. In front of nearly 3,000 fans on Military Appreciation & Fireworks Night, the Orange County squad battled for a comeback until the final whistle. Forward Michael Seaton had a bending shot on goal saved late.
True to form this season, Orange County held a huge lead in possession carrying 66%. The home club also outshot the Toros 19-14, but they couldn’t solve Houston Dynamo loanee goalkeeper Tyler Deric.
Orange County SC now finds itself equal on points with Phoenix Rising FC for second place in the Western Conference. The club returns to the Pacific Northwest, after defeating Portland Timbers FC 2 last week, to face Seattle Sounders FC 2 on Sunday, September 2nd. Orange County’s next home match is September 8th, when it hosts OKC Energy FC. Tickets are available at https://www.orangecountysoccer.com/tickets, or by calling 949-647-GOAL.
