August 23th, 2018 (Irvine, Calif.) – Last night, Orange County SC made history by breaking its franchise record for wins in a season (15) and points (50) in defeating Portland Timbers 2 at Merlo Field 3-2. The club also extended its unbeaten streak to eight matches with its fourth straight victory.
It was a familiar hero opening the scoring for Orange County on the road. In the 9th minute, defender Joe Amico played a ball from the right wing through the penalty area and it found forward Thomas Enevoldsen. The USL Golden Boot leader calmly buried the shot past Timbers 2 goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh. T2 midfielder Tomas Conechny equalized for Portland shortly before the half-time whistle.
A free kick would give Orange County the lead again in the 65th minute. Midfielder Aodhan Quinn’s delivery led to a big McIntosh save off of a deflection, but defender Alex Crognale was nearby to blast home the follow-up from close range for Orange County. The back-and-forth affair would continue with T2 leading scorer Foster Langsdorf equalizing in the 79th minute.
But, the USL’s top scorer would secure the victory for Orange County late. A cross from defender Noah Powder was met by a nifty back heel from Enevoldsen. The 85th minute goal was his 16th on the campaign.
With the big road win, Orange County again pulls level on points with Real Monarchs SLC, which has led the Western Conference for the majority of the season. Orange County SC returns home this Saturday to host Rio Grande Valley FC Toros at Championship Soccer Stadium for Military Appreciation Night, with a post-match fireworks show right on the pitch.
